IKE TURNER
KWEM 1948-1953

Originally from Clarksdale, Miss., Ike Turner relocated to West Memphis by 1947. Turner, an extraordinary musician, performed on KWEM with Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton, and Junior Parker. By 1953, Turner was recording and producing hit records in the KWEM studios for RPM/Modern Records. He cut hits for Wolf, Parker, Pat Hare, and Calvin Newborn and, in the process, forced Sam Phillips to start his own record label, “SUN Records.” During his career, Turner won two Grammy Awards and received nominations for three others.
