THE BILL BLACK COMBO

After being forced out of the Elvis band by Col. Tom Parker in 1959, Bill Black joined up with KWEM's Reggie Young and founded the Bill Black Combo. Black had gotten his start at KWEM in 1954 along with Scotty Moore and the Starlight Wranglers. The Combo started reeling out #1 hits at Hi Records, paving the way for future Hi stars Willie Mitchell, Al Green, and Ann Peebles. In 1964, the Combo became the opening act for the Beatles' first tour (28 cities) of America. In the 1970's and 1980's, under the direction of Bob Tucker, the Combo became the #1 instrumental group in the USA.
