KWEM 1949-1953
James Cotton, brought to West Memphis as a child by Sonny Boy Williamson, became a member of Howlin’ Wolf’s band and soon had his own show on KWEM with Junior Parker, Ike Turner, and Matt “Guitar” Murphy of the Blues Brothers. Discovered by Sam Phillips while at KWEM, he cut a hit record on the SUN label in 1953. Although he also played drums and the harmonic, Cotton began his professional career playing the blues harp. He received a Grammy award in 1996.
